Seven to represent women's swim team at NCAA Division II meet next month
By: Caitie Ryan, staff writer At the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, Gannon University’s men’s and women’s swim teams finished sixth place overall.
There were 11 school records set between the two teams. In addition to the records set, the women’s team will send five swimmers and two divers to nationals. Sophomore Ellie Hess, freshman Jackie Rzymek, senior Rachel Rzymek, sophomore Kaitlyn Bosy and junior Sarah Lawton along with two divers – junior Megan Beresford and sophomore Dianna Rocco – are advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships March 9-13 in Canton, Ohio. Junior Mitchel Meighen placed third in the 200 breaststroke, an individual best. “We had a pretty good meet collectively,” Meighen said. “Both the men and women finished sixth in the conference. Our team improved a lot over the last year, but so did all of the others. There was a ton of tough competition.” Sophomore Josh Marzilli, set a school record in the 1,650 by finishing the race in 16 minutes, 25.03 seconds. Sophomore Sam Bluhm also set a school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.89. Bosy placed fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.16 – a school record. Jackie Rzymek’s time of 2:08.19 in the 200 was good enough for a school record. Sophomore Alex Dovale and sophomore Greg Nelson tied for the school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:44.58. The women’s 200 free relay team made up of Hess, Bosy and the Ryzmeks placed third with a school-record time of 1:36.33. The men’s 800 freestyle relay placed fifth with a time of 7:03.44 – a school record. The women’s 200 and 400 medley relay teams set a school record with a time of 1:46.92. CAITIE RYAN
