Gannon University’s award- winning student run magazine, Totem, is getting ready for its annual submissions.
The Totem accepts poetry, prose, short stories, art – painting, photography, multimedia and pencil – and audio submissions.
The deadline for submissions is Oct. 23.
The Totem strives to highlight the creative talents of those in the university’s community by sampling a wide range of artistic media, Siobhan Brown, co-editor, said.
“It is a chance to showcase the diverse gifts and talents people have to offer,” Brown, a senior secondary English education major, said.
Berwyn Moore, Totem adviser, said the staff this year is brand new and she is excited to work with them.
Moore said the Totem allows all majors to get involved.
“We have a nursing major as a co-editor, so I’d like to think we reach out to all the colleges at Gannon,” Moore said.
Rachael Bucey, a junior nursing major, said Totem means creativity, electricity and right-brained thinkers.
“I have always been an artist, poet and a musician,” Bucey said. “My major does not allow me to incorporate those assets in my daily life.”
Totem’s theme this year is “Don’t hold back,” Moore said. “When the judges review all the work that has been submitted, all names are removed.”
Totem is a recipient of many accolades including, 2013 winner of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs National Program Directors Prize for Undergraduate Literary Magazines for Design, 2013 first place with special merit award from the American Scholastic Press Association – ASPA – and outstanding division pages award from ASPA.
People like to relate to others more than you think, Bucey said.
“It can be extremely intimidating to expose raw emotion and creativity,” Bucey said. “But so rewarding when you finally can sigh and be relieved with sharing your most vulnerable work.” All written and electronic submissions should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Art submissions may be delivered to Room 3242 or 3227 in the Palumbo Academic Center. If any questions arise, please contact Totem editors, Siobhan Brown at email@example.com or Rachael Bucey at firstname.lastname@example.org.
