Vice President of Academic Affairs: Hannah Smerker
What experience do you already have with SGA?
I was freshman class representative my first semester, and am currently the secretary.
Why are you running for Vice President of Academic Affairs?
I think secretary was a great position to just kind of get my toes wet in the executive board. It was great for me just to see how SGA works from an executive board perspective. Now, as VP of Academic Affairs, I would like to take it to the next level and have a position that works on different projects, specifically academics – like with the grading scale, with program requirements, things like that.
What are your goals if you are elected Vice President of Academic Affairs?
I’d like to really open up communication between the students and the administrators who make decisions about our academics, because right now I feel it’s lacking. I’d like to do what the students really want done with the grading scale, the liberal core, to make sure everyone is getting the education they want.
Why did you decide to get involved with SGA?
I was never involved in student government in high school, so it was a new opportunity. Also, I realize that SGA has a large potential to make a difference on campus. That potential to make changes that students want was my driving factor to join.
What have you accomplished during your time on SGA so far?
The secretary position was lacking when I joined. A lot of our minutes weren’t organized, the office wasn’t organized, so it was my job to restructure the position.
Is there anything else you would like the student body to know about you?
SGA has really helped me learn to voice my opinion and to step up and take the initiative to lead. As VP of Academic Affairs, I would continue to grow my leadership skills.
